New York Psychologists Now Have Mandated Continuing Education

New York became one of the last states to mandate continuing education for psychologists.  Starting January 1, 2021, all New York psychologists will need to affirm on their triennial license renewal form that they completed the required continuing education.  This requirement is being phased in over three years, and by January 1, 2024 all New York psychologists will need to complete 36 units of continuing education for their triennial renewal.  The manner of the phase in is to require 1 CE unit each month after January 1, 2021 so those renewing in January 1, 2022 will need 12 CE units and those renewing in January 1, 2023 will need 24 CE units.

To obtain CE credit, New York psychologists are required to take a CE class from an approved provider of CE.  Professional Psych Seminars is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board of Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0005.

Courses acceptable for continuing education must be administered by a Department-approved provider, like Professional Psych Seminars, and must be in an approved subject area.  All Professional Psych Seminars’ classes are in these approved subject areas.  The regulations state that the subject matter must contribute to the professional practice of licensed psychology, as defined in section 7601-a of the Education Law.  Acceptable subjects may include, but are not limited to, clinical interventions and evidence-based practice; psychology research and program evaluation; cross-disciplinary offerings from medicine, law, administration, education, behavioral and social sciences related to psychology practice, patient communications, recordkeeping, and matters relating to law and/or ethics which contribute to professional practice in psychology and the health, safety, and/or welfare of the public.

The law requires each licensee complete a minimum of 3 hours of coursework in professional ethics, including the laws, rules, and regulations for practice in New York State in any 36-month period.  Professional Psych Seminars classes in Law and Ethics meet this regulation.
