Screen Safety Essentials: Prevention, Identification, and Treatment of Digital Injuries

Screen safety is a major concern for 76% of families. Yet only 65% of children have talked to their parents about online safety. 84% of parents take steps to monitor or restrict their children's online activities, yet over 30% say they hesitate to raise awareness about screen dangers to their kids in fear they will alert or scare them. Parents turn to educators and health and mental service providers for the identification and treatment of digital injuries like addiction, victimization from predators, cyberbullying, financial exploitation, distraction, and misinformation, among others - issues that could have been prevented. In severe situations, partial outpatient or inpatient treatment is required with a family component. The tech knowledge gap between “tech immigrant” parents and experts versus “tech native” youth is challenging, especially for those who haven't received specialized training. This webinar provides mental health clinicians with strategies to prevent, identify, assess, and treat digital injuries.

Tracy Bennett, Ph.D.

Tracy Bennett, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and screen safety expert, who teaches families how to strengthen relationships AND achieve screen sanity. She is the founder and CEO of GetKidsInternetSafe (GKIS) and the author of Screen Time in the Mean Time: A Parently Guide to Get Kids and Teens Internet Safe.

In her work as a licensed clinical psychologist for 30 years, she sees the impacts of digital injury and how to treat and prevent it. After being distracted by the loss of her parents, she needed answers for her kids; shame-free, actionable strategies that work. They weren’t out there, so she committed to the GKIS mission of digital injury prevention. She doesn’t rely on scare tactics and extreme no-screen recommendations. Instead, her approach is to empower training participants with clinically tested strategies. Her research and teaching as faculty at CSUCI complement her warm, real-life skill set. She consults with experts in technology and education and has served on the Youth Advisory Team for Facebook’s Messenger Kids and was the Global Ambassador of TeenSafe. Her television and radio appearances, keynotes, blog articles, and online parenting programs make a powerful impact on families.
