Relationship Strategies in Trauma Treatment: Treating Challenging Clients

This practical webinar addresses the therapeutic relationship with challenging trauma clients. Drawing on attachment theory and research, and using a relational, integrative approach, Dr. Muller follows the ups and downs of the therapy relationship in trauma work. He points to choices therapists make in navigating the process, examining how they affect outcome.
Specifically, he looks at relational patterns in trauma work, and how these lead to troubling therapist-client enactments. When left unchecked, such patterns lead to ruptures in the therapeutic relationship. The workshop looks in detail on how to navigate the relationship in trauma work, and how to repair a ruptured alliance.
Theory is complemented by case examples and therapy segments, which are drawn from Dr. Muller's most recent book, Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up, winner of the 2019 ISSTD award for the year’s best written work on trauma.

Robert T. Muller, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology at York University in Toronto. He was trained at Harvard University and was previously on the Faculty at the University of Massachusetts. Dr Muller is a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD) for his work on trauma treatment. His psychotherapy bestsellers, Trauma and the Avoidant Client and Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up have been translated widely and won the 2011 and 2019 ISSTD awards for the years best written work on trauma. As lead investigator on several multi-site programmes to treat interpersonal trauma, Dr Muller has lectured internationally (Australia, China, UK, Europe, USA), and has been Keynote Speaker at mental health conferences in New Zealand, USA, and Canada. He founded an online magazine, The Trauma & Mental Health Report, that is now visited by well over 100,000 readers a year. With over 30 years in the field, he practices in Toronto.

How long to I have to complete this class?

There is no time limit. You can take as long as you'd like to complete the class.

Can I sign-up for a class now, even though I don't want to take it for some time in the future?

I lost my certificate. What do I do?

Do I have to take the entire class at one time or can I stop and come back another time?

You can sign in and out anytime, from any computer, to continue the class. We break our classes into segments of 20 to 30 minutes. You can watch one segment and then come back later. You can even fast forward within a segment.

I am concerned about having to remember everything to take the test. Will this be a problem?

No. We ask you 2 to 3 questions after each 20 to 30 minute video lesson. Answer the questions after each lesson and save your answers. You can come back later and watch another video lesson when you have time. You don't have to remember more than one video lesson at a time. Also, most of our questions are very straight forward. You should have no problem answering them if you've watched the video lesson.
