Freedom from Chronic Pain and Suffering: A Journey of Hope
Chronic pain affects an estimated 116 million American adults—more than the total affected by heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. Pain also costs the nation up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity. This sobering report is from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). For people living with chronic pain, these statistics do not come close to capturing the suffering they continue to experience. Participants will learn what clients need in order to be free from suffering. The answer will be different for each person, but this presentation covers the general areas that are important to focus on and develop. These areas are as follows: (A) physical; (B) psychological (thinking /feeling); (C) social/cultural; and (D) spiritual, as these are the ones most impacted when living with chronic pain and coexisting disorders on a daily basis. It is not just about the physical body. This means that if a chronic pain treatment plan does not adequately address all four areas, that plan will not be as effective as it could be, and patients may continue to suffer. This presentation also explains what an effective chronic pain management treatment plan must contain three major components: (1) Effective and safe medication management. (2) A plan to manage the psychological/emotional components of pain. (3) A proactive practice of non-medication based and holistic interventions.
