Sex, Porn and Addiction: Challenges to Romance, Intimacy, Fidelity and Attachment in the Digital Age

Is the Internet bringing us closer together or further apart? What is the effect of online porn, webcams and virtual sexuality on human relationships and mental health? How are our children and young adults finding and entering online worlds that are unknown to most treatment professionals?

This workshop is designed to offer clinical insight into the issues surrounding sex, intimacy, dating and relationships over the past three decades of online, technological development. There will be an examination of the “new” meanings of the words relationship, infidelity and personal privacy, while addressing some of the challenges faced by clinicians, spouses and couples by online access to app-based hook-ups and internet porn. Participants will learn how the internet and digital interconnectivity has changed our lives and the lives of those we love and treat. Additionally, this presentation will thoroughly discuss the issues of sexual addiction/compulsivity offering an overview of the questions and concerns most often asked by clinicians sex addicts (of all sexual orientations) and their spouses/partners as well as the general public. The discussion covers the diagnosis of sexual addiction/compulsivity, common behaviors exhibited by sex addicts/compulsives, common negative consequences, the all-too-frequent relationship between early-life trauma and sex addiction/compulsivity. Participants will be introduced to a brand-new attachment based model for treatment of spouses/partners of all addicts, moving us beyond codependency.
