Advances in Understanding and Treating Addiction and Co-Occurring Disorders

Gain knowledge and confidence in treating individuals with addiction to substances and co-occurring mental health disorders. Nearly one in six Americans battle a substance use disorder (SUD) each year and almost 40 percent of these individuals have a co-occurring mental health disorder.

This course is designed to help you better understand addiction and provide you with effective tools to treat individuals without experiencing burn out. Using the ASAM Criteria, participants will learn how to both assess and conceptualize SUDs and co-occurring disorders and determine the appropriate level of care. Strategies to engage patients using motivational interviewing will be presented, as well as the components of effective SUD treatment, including the use of medications for addiction treatment (MAT). Clinical case vignettes will be used throughout the presentation.

Ken Bachrach, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, who has over 25 years of experience working with the most difficult COD cases in his role as Clinical Director of Tarzana Treatment Centers. He oversees programs for individuals with mild, moderate, and serious mental illness, most of whom have co-occurring Substance Use Disorders. He is the Site Principal Investigator for the National Institute of Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network, and has tested protocols on motivational interviewing, brief strategic family therapy with adolescent substance users, and smoking cessation for stimulant users. The current study compares the use of Suboxone and Vivitrol for opiate dependent individuals in outpatient treatment. Dr. Bachrach has trained thousands of clinicians in understanding addiction and COD, treating methamphetamine addiction, motivational interviewing, and the use of medications in addiction treatment. Dr. Bachrach is also President and CEO of Professional Psych Seminars, and is committed to providing high quality continuing education, which integrates research and clinical practice, to mental health professionals.

How long to I have to complete this class?

There is no time limit. You can take as long as you'd like to complete the class.

Can I sign-up for a class now, even though I don't want to take it for some time in the future?

I lost my certificate. What do I do?

Do I have to take the entire class at one time or can I stop and come back another time?

You can sign in and out anytime, from any computer, to continue the class. We break our classes into segments of 20 to 30 minutes. You can watch one segment and then come back later. You can even fast forward within a segment.

I am concerned about having to remember everything to take the test. Will this be a problem?

No. We ask you 2 to 3 questions after each 20 to 30 minute video lesson. Answer the questions after each lesson and save your answers. You can come back later and watch another video lesson when you have time. You don't have to remember more than one video lesson at a time. Also, most of our questions are very straight forward. You should have no problem answering them if you've watched the video lesson.
